The inclusion of candidates representing the minorities on the Liberal opposition lists for the forthcoming municipal elections has aroused the vigorous protest of the government party which is desirous of keeping the monopoly of power and privilege exclusively for Turks. The government press points out that while civic rights are not denied to non-Turkish minorities their past “cannot be forgotten because they have not changed their mentality and cannot be entrusted with power.”

The Liberal opposition, replying to the government party’s attacks, says it is time to utilize the cooperation of the non-Turks since a purely Turkish administration has failed in its task. Because of the determination of Fethi Bey, leader of the Liberal party, to officially put into effect the existing but never properly executed equality of minorities, Jews will be candidates for election in the Turkish municipalities for the first time.
