Miss Henrietta Szold, honorary president of Hadassah and head of the Youth Aliyah organization here, today issued a statement deploring the fact that the controversy which has arisen between orthodox circles and the Jewish Agency for Palestine concerning the religious education of the refugee children who arrived here several months ago from Teheran is hindering the work of rescuing additional children.
Miss Szold stated that “personally I think Chief Rabbi Herzog’s stand is correct, but it is impossible to disregard other viewpoints.” The Chief Rabbi has charged that the Agency was placing the bulk of the children in homes and institutions where they would not receive religious guidance. Miss Szold pointed out that many thousands of Jewish children in Europe still awaited rescue, adding that “it is regrettable that the mutual distrust which now prevails is making practical salvage work impossible.”
