The executive of the Mizrachi, religious Zionist organization, decided today to re-examine “conditions allowing its continued participation in the coalition Cabinet.” A special committee was named by the executive to “investigate whether the elements that previously justified the Mizrachi’s participation in the coalition still apply to the present situation.”
The decision was prompted, it was explained, “owing to the realization that Mizrachi’s religious objectives had not been attained, despite Mizrachi’s constant struggle in this direction.” Furthermore, it was noted, the “economic aims of the Mizrachi movement have given rise to considerable anxiety, because of the present development of the country’s economic situation, which the Mizrachi could not foresee.” The Mizrachi is essentially a middle-class movement.
