Sir Francis Montefiore, grand-nephew of the great Jewish philanthropist, Sir Moses Montefiore, died here today. He was 75.
Sir Francis was for many years president of the board of elders of the Spanish-Portugeese Congregation in London, having first assumed the office in 1904.
When Dr. Theodor Herzl inau###rated the movement of political Zionism, Sir Francis Montefiore became one of the leading supporters of the movement in England. He rendered Dr. Herzl many valuable services in the latter’s efforts to achieve recognition for his Zionist aims in the higher circles of British society. Since the war, however, he had not been active in Zionist work.
Sir Francis inherited the baronetcy from his great-uncle Sir Moses Montefliore.
