Addressing a large meeting at the Bnai Synagogue auditorium, Mayor Camillien Houde assured his audience he is a friend of the Jews and will always champion the cause of minorities. “Being a minority all my public life, I can appreciate the difficulties of minority groups,” he said. “You have my assurance that I am on your side, despite the reports that have been circulated in the past to the contrary.”
During his first term as Mayor, Houde was openly accused of anti-Semitic tendencies due to the support he received at the hands of the now defunct Le Goglu publication.
