On December 14—Chanukah week—Montreal Jewry will be asked to complete the building to be known as the Hebrew Educational Centre. The campaign for funds has already received the endorsement and enthusiastic support of many Jews of Montreal.
Until construction was commenced on the Hebrew Educational Institute, the Talmud Torahs were able to accommodate only 1,200 children in the eight schools that were located mainly in the districts unable to provide their own schools. The Hebrew Educational Institute now being erected is a three-story building and contains a combined auditorium, chapel and playroom, a small assembly hall, eight class rooms and a library.
The campaign, which is for a sum of $100,000, is endorsed by 29 synagogues, the various lodges of the Zionist Order of Habonim and the ladies’ auxiliaries of many congregations. The joint chairmen of the campaign are Samuel Hart and Horace Cohen.
