The local Talmud Torahs, which have been closed for the past seven weeks by a teachers’ strike will be re-opened on Sunday, although the demands of the teachers have not been granted fully and they have received no guarantee that salaries will be paid regularly in the future.
The financial situation of the Talmud Torahs continues critical. The settlement of the strike was delayed by the desire of the directors to see the outcome of negotiations between the Jewish Community Council and the Schochtim to make possible subsidies to educational institutions. The Schochtim, however, refuse to permit part of their income to be used for educational purposes.
The conflict has not yet been solved and the Community Council may ultimately drop the Schochtim, in order to insure full control of the Kosher meat income.
