A massive stone monument surmounted by a menorah was unveiled today at Salonica, honoring the memory of 50,000 Greek Jews who perished during the Nazi regime. High local and national Greek officials attended the solemn ceremonies, as well as leaders of the Greek and Salonica Jewish communities and A. L. Easterman, of London, World Jewish Congress director of the international affairs department for Europe. The monument had been erected by the Jewish community of Salonica.
A message from Dr. NahumGoldmann, president of the World Jewish Congress, asserted that “the Jewish people will never forget the Greek Jewish victims of the Nazi tragedy,” and expressed the hope that the Jewish community in this country will “continue to contribute to the development of the Jewish people in the future.”
