Fourteen windows were smashed in an attack today on Temple B’nai Abraham in Newark, New Jersey, while bomb threats were received by synagogues in three other New Jersey cities. The Newark police are investigating the attack on the synagogue.
Rep. Robert W. Kean, New Jersey Republican, said in Newark that “every American has a stake in these indecent acts. We must react with cold determination and a willingness to approve the necessary laws.” Rep. Kean called for “tough Federal laws cracking down on terrorists.”
Former Senator Herbert H. Lehman, in a comment on the wave of synagogue bombings and threats against Jewish and Christian religious institutions, declared that responsibility for these extremist developments must be shared by all who “advocate overt resistance” to the rule of law. He spoke at the 14th annual conference of the Metropolitan Council of B’nai B’rith. The meeting was also addressed by Henry E. Schultz, president of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation League.
