More than 1,000 additional police officers will guard French Jewish sites after a spate of anti- Semitic attacks over the weekend. French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin said it is unclear whether or not the attacks were linked to the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, but added, “France’s Jews are not responsible for what is happening in the Middle East any more than are members of the Arab-Muslim community.” In the most recent incident, firemen said the Or Aviv Synagogue in the city of Marseille was destroyed by fire just before midnight on Sunday.
