All European representatives of the United HIAS Service opened a special conference here to try to work out plans for increasing the number of American visas for Jewish emigrants under the complicated and slow-moving United States Refugee Relief Act. Speakers at the conference include Louis Horwitz, director of United HIAS Service operations, and Charles Jordan, representing the Joint Distribution Committee.
The United HIAS Service contributed 250, 000 francs today to the general relief fund for the victims of the Orleansville earthquake. In a letter to the national disaster relief committee, Mr. Horwitz expressed regret that the newly-formed organization was not in a position to render more direct assistance at this time.
