A renewal of the factional strife in the ranks of the kosher slaughterers’ union local 440 which was the subject of a Health Department investigation last year was expected yesterday.
The internal dissension resulted in a near-riot Monday night when an election squabble culminated in the beating of Kalman Shapiro, a would-be chairman.
The incident took place in the presence of Commissioner of Markets William Fellowes Morgan, Jr. who attended the meeting to deliver an address in which he warned that the factional strife within the local was a result of racketeering in the live poultry industry.
The affray occurred at the beginning when rival factions tried to elect a chairman for the meeting. Shapiro, who, it appeared, was a close winner, was attacked and knocked down. A detective held off an enraged shochet who wanted to beat him while he was prone.
