The world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir will pay its first-ever visit to Israel next week for a series of performances.
The tour was arranged by Gordon Hinckly, president of the Mormon Church Council, and other church officials when they visited Israel last April.
“We’ve been waiting for this for 145 years,” said Hinckly.
The 325-member choir, founded in 1847, is based in Salt Lake City, Utah, the church’s headquarters.
The choir’s tour will add handily to Israeli tourism, as choristers will travel with spouses or other family members, bringing the number of visitors in the group to about 600.
During its 10-day stay, the choir will present five concerts: three a cappella, or without accompaniment, and two with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. They will be part of the Liturgica ’92 annual religious music festival.
