Moroccan Jews, anxious to leave Morocco because of the growing poverty among them, and the increased difficulties in securing employment, are now seeking means to acquire French nationality, it was reported here today. The report said that a great number of Jews in the town of Oujda, near the Algerian border, have applied for French citizenship.
Strict supervision is maintained over people who wish to leave Morocco, and the authorities there generally refuse to issue passports or any other official documents relevant to emigration. Many Jews are, therefore, taking the risk of leaving the country without any legal permission, even though this involves punishment when caught. Reports here relate of the arrest of a number of Jews on board a French ship, while trying to leave Morocco without proper documents.
