Two Moroccan newspapers today criticized Jewish schools for offering Jewish religious instruction in classes where Moslem children are present. Al Alam, organ of the opposition Istiqlal Party, charged that “rabbis” are teaching the Jewish religion to Jewish children in classes which include Moslem youngsters.
The paper said this was “a real provocation to Moroccan national sentiment.” Another paper, the independent Izdihar el Maghreb, published similar criticism and accused the schools of “making foreign propaganda.” The criticism is directed primarily at the schools of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, which have accepted Moslem students for years and which continue to teach Hebrew.
