Morris B. Abram, former president of the American Jewish Committee and Brandeis University, was named yesterday as the first Jewish chairman of the United Negro College Fund which raises money for 36 predominantly black colleges and universities. The schools have a total enrollment of 40,000 students and 2,500 full-time faculty members. As president, Mr. Abram will oversee an effort to raise $10 million this year, compared with 1969 results of $6,875,000. The fund tries to cover at least 10 percent of the operating costs of the 36 member colleges.
