Leaders of South African Jewry paid tribute here to the public services of Morris Kentridge, member of parliament, at a reception given in honor of his 70th birthday by the So. African Jewish Board of Deputies and the So. African Zionist Federation.
Speakers at the gathering included I.A. Maisels, chairman of the Board of Deputies; S.M. Kuper, chairman of the S.A. Zionist Federation; Chief Rabbi L.I. Rabinowitz and others. Mr. Kentridge in replying remarked upon the checkered course of the last forty years in South Africa. There were years when anti-Semitism had been rampant, he said. Today the community was in the happy position where anti-Semitism did not figure in South African public life or even loom upon the horizon, he emphasized.
