Moscow’s chief rabbi, Rabbi Judah Leib Levin, who is also dean of the yeshiva in the Soviet capital, has refused to accept an offer of a set of the Talmud made to him by Michael Garber, president of the Canadian Jewish Congress, it was reported here today.
Mr. Garber, who recently sent a letter to Rabbi Levin, congratulating the latter on his 70th birthday, had offered to send the set of the Talmud as a gift. In a reply from Moscow, written in Hebrew, Rabbi Levin wrote: “We have plenty of books to study from, and even more than we need. In my estimation, there is no necessity to send your copy of the Talmud to us.”
