Funeral services were held today for Rabbi Solomon Shliffer, Chief Rabbi of Moscow’s central synagogue, who died Sunday night of a heart attack at the age of 68.
He was preparing for the evening service when he collapsed. Known as a scholar and defender of the rights of Soviet Union Jewry, he survived the worst rigors of Stalin’s anti-Semitic campaign. A government delegation Monday paid its respects to his widow.
He died three months after achieving his fondest ambition, the re-establishment of a yeshiva in Russia.
