The Soviet news agency Tass reported today in a broadcast over Radio Moscow that Israel is supplying the Chamoun Government of Lebanon with Soviet arms captured by Israeli forces from the Egyptian army in Sinai. The broadcast sought to debunk reports that Lebanese rebels were found in possession of Soviet-made arms.
Radio Moscow said: “As a result of the sudden Anglo-French Israeli attack on Egypt, a part of the Egyptian armaments, among which were Soviet weapons supplied to Egypt on the usual commercial basis, proved to be in the hands of the aggressors, including Israel, And Israel is helping Lebanon with arms.”
There is every possibility Moscow will station Soviet troops in Syria at the request of the United Arab Republic if a summit conference does not lead to a Middle Eastern arrangement, Soviet sources in Paris warned today.
