Radio Liberty reported today that Soviet news media thus far devoted relatively little attention to the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Israel. Tuesday’s issue of Pravda did not mention the trial at all. And Monday’s Pravda merely published a Tass dispatch from Tel Aviv, reporting the conference of the Fighters Against Nazism, which had demanded that “the Eichmann trial must become a trial of nazism.”
Radio Liberty also noted that Soviet reports and broadcasts are avoiding–wherever possible–the words “Jews” and “anti-Semitism.” These terms did not appear in the above-cited Pravda reports. Neither did they appear in the Izvestia account of the trial on April 11. As had earlier Radio Moscow commentaries, the recent published reports refer instead to the millions of “people” from “various European countries” who were murdered on the orders of Eichmann.
