For the first time since the Communist Revolution of 1917, Soviet children will be able to read Old Testament Bible stories in public schools, libraries and homes. An illustrated book entitled, “The Tower of Babel,” has been edited by Kornei Chukovsky and submitted for publication, it was announced today in Moscow.
Chukovsky, 85, is Russia’s most famous children’s poet. The book is written in poetic style. Among the Bible stories told are the Old Testament accounts of the Flood and Noah’s Ark, the Tower of Babel, David and Goliath, and Balaam’s Ass.
Meanwhile, Moscow’s Chief Rabbi Yehuda Leib Levin was reported here to have said yesterday that two bakeries had prepared and delivered 154,000 pounds of matzoh for observant Jews in Moscow.
