Sir Oswald Mosley, anti-Semitic Fascist leader, and three of his henchmen went on trial today at Lewes charged with “riotous assembly.” The four blackshirts pleaded not guilty.
On trial with Sir Oswald are William Joyce, Captain Charles H. B. Budd and Bernard Mullans. The charges arose from a Fascist meeting at Worthing on October 9. Sir Patrick Hastings, leading British advocate, is defending the Fascists.
Prosecutor John Flowers declared at the opening of the trial that “this hearing is not a political prosecution, but the government is concerned with the disgraceful, discreditable and violent state of affairs in the streets of Worthing.
Jack Pritchard, a bystander, swore that Mosley struck him with his fist during the Worthing affair.
