Palestine’s 500,000 Jews observed a complete work stoppage today in mourning over Vladimir Jabotinsky, Zionist leader, whose funeral was held in New York this afternoon. Shops and places of entertainment were closed. Synagogues were crowded with mourners. Processions were held in Tel Aviv and Haifa. Memorial meetings were held in Jewish colonies.
Public buildings flew black flags during the funeral. Newspapers featured lengthy dispatches from New York about Jabotinsky. Dr. L. Altman, Zionist-Revisionist leader, gave a long appreciation of Jabotinsky over the Palestine Broadcasting Service station.
A crowded memorial meeting was held at the Jewish Agency hall, with Jewish leaders eulogizing Jabotinsky. Moshe Shertok, head of the Agency’s political department, read a copy of the condolence cable sent to Jabotinsky’s widow in London. The meeting concluded with the singing of “Hatikvah.”
District Commissioners Edward Keith-Roach of Jerusalem and James H.H. Pollock of Haifa sent condolences on Jabotinsky’s death. The acting Polish Consul General also sent a message.
