Certain areas of the Golan Heights may be closed to night-time traffic as a means of preventing terrorist incursions, it was disclosed today. The army is considering the measure which would affect Jewish settlers and Druze residents.
Senior officers of the Israel Defense Force discussed the idea this week with leaders of the Jewish settlements and found them favorably disposed. Although the Golan Heights have been peaceful in recent years, the upsurge of terrorist incidents elsewhere has raised concern that it too might become a target.
Chief of Staff Gen. Moshe Levy and other senior officers toured the region yesterday following a special meeting of the IDF high command in the Israeli border town of Kiryat Shemona. The meeting was held there as a demonstration of IDF attention to the security of the northern villages.
