Mrs. Bronfman Honored As ‘first Lady of Canadian Jewry’

More than 500 people were present at a special convocation held at Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue for the celebration of its 125th anniversary, with the Jewish Theological Seminary of America giving an honorary doctorate of laws to Canadian Governor General Roland Michener and investing Mrs. Sadye Bronfman, widow of Samuel Bronfman, and Sen. Lazarus Phillips as honorary fellows of the Seminary’s Society of Fellows, the JTSA’s highest non-academic award, Mrs. Bronfman, whose late husband was the famed industrialist and philanthropist, became the first woman fellow of the Society, Her citation hailed her as “the First Lady of Canadian Jewry” and declared: “She has devoted her energies to being her brother’s and sister’s keeper. She has championed the Zionist cause with zeal and distinction.”
