Premier Golda Meir of Israel said last night that her recent talks with President Nixon and Secretary of State William P. Rogers brought “greater understanding now” of Israel’s position “then there was before.” Addressing 3,500 persons at the annual conference banquet of the United Jewish Appeal, Mrs. Meir described the US as “Israel’s biggest friend,” both “before we were a State and since.” However, she added, that does not mean that the US government “always applauds us” or always understands but basically “we knew and we know there is understanding.” She observed that “from time to time it is necessary
