Soviet Ambassador Alexander Abramoff called on Israel Foreign Minister Golda Meir today and reportedly sought clarification of the Israel Government’s attitude towards the plan to move Iraqi troops into territory of the Kingdom of Jordan.
Mrs. Meir explained in detail Israel’s objections to this move, stressing its effect on the military balance of power and its threat to the peace of the entire area.
Previously, Mrs. Meir received French Ambassador Pierre Gilbert who asked for a meeting immediately on his return to Israel from home leave. At this meeting, it was understood, both found a common concern for preservation of the status quo. There were indications that reports that France had approved a “limited operation” on the part of Iraq were premature.
Mrs. Meir also saw today the British Ambassador, Sir John Nicholls, who returned to his post today after home leave. The conversation at this meeting also reportedly dealt with the planned Iraqi troop move.
