New housing must be constructed in Israel at the rate of 3, 000 units a month, to cope with the flow of immigrants from Eastern Europe now reaching Israel, Mrs. Golda Meir, the Israeli Foreign Minister, told a Bond Drive meeting in Brooklyn tonight.
She warned that, unless the Bond Drive provided adequate funds for this, for the harnessing of the Jordan and the establishment of new industries “we in Israel shall be forced to turn the clock back to the days of eight years ago, when we had to set up tents and tin huts to house the new immigrants and subject them to life on a subsistence level.”
Stressing Israel’s readiness to make any sacrifice to receive every Jew who wants or needs to come to Israel, Mrs. Meir expressed confidence that to the Jews of the United States would be moved “to lend us the means to fulfill this historic mission with dignity and with a minimum of dislocation and hardship.”
