Mrs. Cyrus Vance, wife of the American Secretary of State, spent part of her free morning today in Jerusalem with a tour of Meah Shearim, the ultra-Orthodox section of the capital. Accompanied by a dozen persons from the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Mrs. Vance visited the Talmud Torah Yeshiva, the biggest in the neighborhood, and a girls’ school built with funds from the U.S. government.
Neturai Karta leader Rabbi Hirsch, speaking with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in Jerusalem, noted that while the Foreign Ministry entourage seemed anxious to keep the visit short, Mrs. Vance appeared enthusiastic and was “enlightened” by the explanations of Neturai Karta dress, ideology and customs which she received from the rabbi.
