The municipalities of a number of Dutch towns including Limburg have begun a joint effort to clear up and restore abandoned Jewish cemeteries in the area where Jewish communities existed before the Second World War but were wiped out by the Nazis. The cemeteries have been neglected during the post few years.
In each town, a special municipal commission has been appointed to restore and care for the cemeteries, which are regarded as historical monuments. The work is being done as a tribute to the Jewish martyrs who once lived in the areas.
