Army authorities have condemned the Ainring DP camp, near Bad Reichenhall, as a health and fire hazard and ordered its 3,000 Jewish refugee occupants to move on Tuesday to the Lechfeld Camp, which was formerly a German and then American air base, near Landsberg.
The Ainring camp committee, as well as the DP’s, announced today that they were (##)posed to the transfer despite the poor conditions under which they live. DP spokesman pointed out that the move should have been made a year ago. Now, as a result the efforts and sacrifices of the refugees, schools and a synagogue have been established and the conditions made somewhat tolerable. In addition, there is the (##) antipathy against any movement, except out of Germany.
However, Army authorities are insisting that the Ainring facilities are substandard and must be evacuated. Jewish authorities have visited Lechfeld and re(##)t that “while external conditions are unsatisfactory, the actual living accommodations are excellent.” The Central Jewish Committee at Munich has undertaken the (##) of persuading the DP’s to move.
The secretariat of the United Nations today informed the Army that it had received petitions with 25,000 signatures from DP’s in the American zone who wish to (##)grate to Palestine. The secretariat asked the Army to inform the DP’s that the (##)titions have been forwarded to the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine.
