Israel Labor Minister Golda Myerson tonight told 4,000 persons attending a “Defend Israel” demonstration in Brooklyn that “the rallying of millions of Jews around the State of Israel” represents the “only hope” of rescuing the 2,500,000 Jews in the Communist countries.
In her first public address since she arrived in the United States to head the Israel United Nations delegation temporarily during the debate on the Soviet anti-Jewish campaign, Mrs. Myerson declared: “Our reply to the Soviet campaign of slander cannot be made only in the form of expressions of indignation and protest before the international forum of the United Nations, or at mass meetings. Our reply must be one of deeds.”
Mrs. Myerson, who was Israel’s first Minister to Moscow, called for wide response to the Israel bond campaign as a means of strengthening Israel to receive large numbers of Jews if they can leave the Soviet bloc nations. She pledged that “we will receive them under any conditions, irrespective of our hardships.” By proclamation of the Borough President, today was “Golda Myerson Day” in Brooklyn.
Henry Morgenthau, Jr., chairman of the board of governors of the bond drive organization, another featured speaker at the rally, urged the United States to expand its military assistance to Israel “because, if attacked, the people of Israel can be one of the most powerful anchors of military defense in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
In response to the pleas by Mrs. Myerson and Mr. Morgenthau for fullest support of the bond drive, the men and women at the rally pledged themselves to an intensive effort to further the sale of Israel bonds.
