Major Jewish organizations have commended the Federal Communications Commission for its action in ordering a public hearing on allegations that G.A. Richards, president of radio stations KMPC in Los Angeles, WJR in Detroit, and WGAR in Cleveland, instructed his staff to slant news broadcasts, so as to reflect his personal views.
In a letter from the National Community Relations Advisory Council–central coordinating agency for the American Jewish Committee, American Jewish Congress, Anti-Defamation League, Jewish Labor Committee, Jewish War Veterans, Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and 26 regional, state and local Jewish community organizations in all parts of the country–the F.C.C. was commended for acting “in a way to merit public confidence in it as the steward of fairness and honesty in the field of radio news broadcasting.” The F.C.C. ordered the hearing to sift charges that Richards had ordered the broadcasting of biased news items.
