The New York City Civil Service Employees Committee for Histadrut added $50, 000 to the Histadrut Scholarship Fund as a result of the testimonial dinner tendered Deputy Commissioner of Public Works Meyer F. Wiles here last night. Nearly 1, 000 guests including many past and present city commissioners attended the event which was addressed by Israel’s Minister of Labor Yigal Allon.
Mr. Allon, a hero of Israel’s War of Independence, who has the rank of Brigadier General, stated that on “Israel’s 18th anniversary being celebrated this week, we must hail the unique role of Histadrut in the rehabilitation of a nation in an independent state. Histadrut is doing a first-rate job in the field of social welfare, vocational training and provision of scholarships for young people. One of the main measures required to turn immigrants into a nation that can do all kinds of work is the expansion of vocational training facilities and the provision of scholarships.”
This evening, 400 members of the Queens County Histadrut Council tendered a dinner in honor of City Council President Frank O’Connor, raising $18, 000 for the Histadrut Scholarship Fund. Former City Council President Paul R. Screvane was toastmaster of the dinner, which was addressed by Yaacov Morris of the Jewish Agency for Israel; Israel Stolarsky, associate director of the Israel Histadrut Campaign and Howard J. Agronin, executive chairman of the Labor Zionist Organization of America.
