Early Congressional action on the Ickes plan for development of Alaska, as embodied in the King-Havenner bill, was urged editorially by the New York Post today.
“Besides immeasurably strengthening our national defense,” the editorial said, “a settled Alaska would give this country a tremendous new market, a supply of essential materials and new jobs for our unemployed Alaskans would benefit by stabilizing employment for its own residents. Hundreds of thousands of refugees would find opportunity for a new life.”
Declaring the Ickes program could not be accomplished overnight and that a start was “long overdue,” the editorial concluded: “At the present pace of world events, Congress cannot afford to adjourn without laying the foundations.”
