Ignoring the statement issued last week on behalf of all rabbis in New York in which opposition was expressed to the introduction of daily prayers in public schools, the directors of the New York State School Board Association today endorsed the proposal that schools open each day with a prayer. The Association represents 98 percent of the more than 830 school boards in New York state.
The Board of Regents, governing body of the state’s educational system, proposed the daily prayer last November 30. Many boards throughout the state have adopted the suggestion. The New York Board of Rabbis came out against the proposal declaring that daily school prayers would “give rise to secretarian practices.”
