Miss Sylvia Haber, lawyer, a Brooklyn resident with offices in Manhattan, has accepted appointment as Chairman of the Women’s Court Committee of the Brooklyn Jewish Big Brother and Big Sister Association, it was announced Friday by Assemblyman Albert D. Schanzer, President of the Association.
The Committee, under the chairmanship of Miss Haber, will hold itself in readiness to take care of the case of any delinquent Jewish girl brought before the Women’s Court sitting in Brooklyn, and will have a representative at court on designated days each week.
The appointment was made as the result of a request for help by Magistrate Sylvester Sabbatino, now presiding in the Women’s Court, to commit a young girl sixteen and one-half years of age because he thought there was hope of saving her through the help of a welfare agency. In response to the Judge’s request. Assemblyman Schanzer said, “the policy of the Brooklyn Jewish Big Brother and Big Sister Association has always been to respond in the case of every delinquent called to its attention, regardless of the source or court from which the call comes. We appreciate the very splendid, social service point of view taken by judges like yourself and Magistrate Brill in the Women’s Court and will be glad to extend you every possible cooperation.”
Judge Sabbatino yesterday expressed pleasure at this ready response to his call for assistance by making the following statement: “I was deeply impressed by the personality, sincerity and fine character of the members that attended the regular monthly meeting of the Brooklyn Jewish Big Brother and Big Sister Association recently at which I had occasion to be present. I was very much impressed by the reports of the various committees and took note of the fact that the organization made it a point to conduct a special series of lectures giving technical instruction in child guidance and psychology. I am certain that the organization will be of great assistance to us in salvaging Jewish girls who are arraigned in the Women’s Court and are not beyond social cure. I congratulate Miss Haber on the honor of this appointment and her willingness to be of service.”
