Dr. Fridjhof Nansen, the League of Nations High Commissioner for Russian refugees today offered his praise to the Canadian Government for its liberal action in granting admission to many unfortunate Jewish refugees who had been ordered expelled from Roumania and may not return to Russia.
This statement was made to a committee of Montreal Jews consisting of Lyon Cohen and S. W. Jacobs, M. P., in their capacity of representatives of the Jewish Colonization association.
Dr. Nansen informed his callers that he had tried to obtain the permission of the Soviet Government for 1000 refugees in Roumania to return home. The Soviet Government, he said, had objected to this because it considered these refugees to be opposed to Bolshevism. The Soviet Government wanted to send a commission to Bucharest to make a special investigation before allowing some of the refugees to return. This, Dr. Nansen stated, the Roumanian Government refused to permit. He also informed the representatives of the ICA that among the 50,000 soldiers in the armies of Deniken and Wrangel who had fled to Constantinople, there was a number of Jews who had taken an active part in the activities of theses armies against Bolshevism. These soldiers, he said, had become a charge on the Jewish organizations in Constantinople who are contributing toward their maintenance.
