The presiding officer of a Baghdad “people’s court” was quoted here today as denouncing President Gamal Abdel Nasser of the United Arab Republic as “a Zionist devil and a cheap little Hitler.”
London newspaper reports quoted Col. Mahdawi, who is presiding at the trial of 20 Iraqis accused in absentia of participation in an anti-regime revolt in Mosul last year.
The court official also referred to the Egyptian dictator as a “Zionist hireling and stooge of American imperialism.” Nasser is accused of having fomented the revolt in an attempt to upset the rule of Col. Kassem, the Iraqi ruler.
