Nathan Chanin, an outstanding figure in Jewish life for nearly half a century, has announced his retirement as general secretary of the Workmen’s Circle, national Jewish fraternal and cultural organization. Mr. Chanin, whose 75th birthday was observed last year in a special 60-page supplement of the Jewish Daily Forward, said that he plans to continue his associations with the Workmen’s Circle and other organizations in Jewish life. He has long been a leader in HIAS, Bonds for Israel, and the Jewish Labor Committee, which he helped to found.
Jacob T. Zukerman, president of the Workmen’s Circle, said that Mr. Chanin’s retirement had been accepted with “keen regret.” Benjamin Gebiner, assistant general secretary for 25 years, will become executive secretary; and William Stern, director of the English-Speaking division for 17 years, will become administrative director. Zalman Yefroikin, the educational director for 12 years, will continue as the third national staff officer.
