The headquarters of the American Jewish Conference today announced that the election of the 375 delegates who will be sent to the Conference by over 600 Jewish communities throughout the country is almost concluded. An additional 125 delegates will be named by the national membership organizations after the distribution of the available seats is made at the meeting of the executive committee which takes place in New York the middle of this month.
“The results of the elections in New York have shown that the choosing of the delegates was not strictly along partisan lines,” the announcement said. “Many independent delegates were elected on the basis of their personal qualifications or individual program. Just as outside of New York, some recognized local leaders were defeated in favor of independent slates. This development was ascribed to the operation of the cumulative voting, which had been proposed to the National Board of Elections by representatives of the minority viewpoint, to assure representation to ‘the minority’ in the Conference.”
