Several hundred prominent Jews from every part of the United States are expected to attend the national conference of the American Ort, called by Adolph Lewisohn, financier and philanthropist, at his home at 881 Fifth Avenue, New York City, on November 9th. The conference will deliberate on the critical situation of Jewry in Russia, Poland, Roumania and other East European countries.
The stabilization of the economic situation in the East European countries is bringing about a rapid spread of unemployment among the Jews, because such occupations as storekeeping and trading, which have always constituted the means of livelihood for the greater part of the Jewish population, are disappearing under the new system of co-operative organizations.
Mr. Lewisohn, whose home is one of the few in New York City spacious enough to house a conference of the size this one promises to be, has recently accepted the honorary chairmanship of the Ort Reconstruction Fund, which is being raised under the auspices of the European and American
Ort Associations. The Ort Association program aims for the promotion of agriculture and technical trades among the Jews, and it has already succeeded in settling thousands of them on land grants and in establishing others in their own workshops. The Reconstruction Fund will be used exclusively for loans to Jewish farmers and artisans and for the support of the technical trade schools maintained by the Association.
Among the larger cities that have already chosen their delegations to the national conference are: Chicago, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis, and Milwarkee.
