National issues, including the current Cabinet crisis and the anti-black market drive, highlight municipal election campaigns throughout the country. The municipal elections will be held November 14.

The possibility of national elections being held within the next few months gives added significance to the local elections at this time. It is hoped that the municipal balloting will give the country a preview of the relative strength of the various political parties.

Political observers generally agree that the Mapai will remain the leading political party in the country with the General Zionists and the Mapam registering increases while the Herut is expected to drop some of its strength. Few observers care to make a definite prediction of the strength of the Religious Bloc whose base is believed to be strong among the new immigrants.
