The national three-day conference of the United Jewish Appeal will open here tomorrow at the Waldorf Astoria to formulate the 1953 campaign. More than 1,200 leaders of Jewish communities from all parts of the country will participate in the deliberations.
The delegates will assess programs conducted in 1952 in behalf of more than 700,000 immigrants in Israel, 250,000 dependent Jews in the Moslem countries and Europe, and thousands of recent newcomers to the United States. They will consider in detail the budgetary requirements of the U. J. A. ‘s constituent agencies — the United Israel Appeal, Joint Distribution Committee and United Service for New Americans — and will vote adoption of a campaign goal for 1953.
Speakers at the sessions will include Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the Jewish Agency; Abba S. Eban, Israel Ambassador to the United States; Dr. George Josephthal, treasurer of the Jewish Agency and chief Israel delegate at the reparations negotiations with the Bonn Government; Edward M. M. Warburg, general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal; Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, executive vice-chairman of the U. J. A.; and Jack D. Weller, chairman of the U. J. A. National Cash Campaign.
Mr. Warburg, in a statement today, noted that the conference will coincide with the first days of Chanukah. “The greatest task facing the more than 1,200 conferees would be to infuse in all American Jews the same spirit of victory that once helped Jews to conquer a threat to Israel’s freedom,” he declared.
