Germans still treat Jews too kindly, the Danzig newspaper Ostee Zeitung complains in a front-page editorial made available by the Office of War Information today.
The editorial, entitled “Warning and Example,” says: “Still, here and there, a certain imcomprehension of the population existstowards measures forcibly taken by the National Socialist Reich and gradually by all European nations united with the Axis against the Jews still in Europe. Although no longer very frequently, ocassionally a single Jew, marked by the Star of Zion and ruled by special laws, has received a certain compassion because the good-natured German Michel refuses to make an individual responsible for his people’s total attitude.”
The editorial argues that this compassion is mistaken because the individual Jew is strongly linked with “world Jewry” and United Nations propaganda. “All the European nations will suffer the same fate if they forget only for a moment that all Jews still living on their territory are without exception active mortal enemies, collaborators of the outside enemy and continuously connected with him. Any compassion towards them is a source of mortal danger, any indulgence is punishable as frivolity, any softness is a crime against one’s own life. Regarding this irreconcilable, revengeful adversary, the old American phrase about Red Indians must be varied: “Only a dead Jew is a good Jew.”
