President Roosevelt, Governor Lehman and the American people were brought into l’Affaire LaGuardia today as the Nazi press continued its campaign of vituperation over the New York mayor’s suggestion that Chancellor Hitler be represented in a proposed World’s Fair chamber of horrors.

The newest onslaught was touched off by Mayor LaGuardia’s reply to the German Government’s official protest to Washington, in which he said he knew of no artist who could adequately depict either Hitler of his Government.

Der Angriff, which led yesterday’s outburst against LaGuardia, today published a full page of pictures aiming to show the United States in the worst possible light. The captain over the page declared: “This is America, land of liberty for all gangsters.”

A streamer over the Angriff’s first page announced that “the lout LaGuardia is guilty of new shameless acts against Germany.” The headline over another page in Propaganda Minister Goebbels’ mouthpiece read: “Four Years of Roosevelt, Unprecedented Misery in the United States.”

Chancellor Hitler’s Voelkischer Beobachter suggested that Mayor LaGuardia be confined in an insane asylum or jail to render him “harmless.”

Alone of the German newspapers, the Frankfurter Zeitung assumed a calm air in discussing the incident, pointing out that in a free country such as the United States anybody is entitled to express an opinion freely and the Government cannot prevent it.
