The Jews of Austria have nothing to fear. There is not the slightest chance for the German Nazis to gain a foothold in Austria, George h. Earle, 3rd, former American Minister to Austria, declared hero yesterday on his return from Vienna.
If there is to be a change of government, it is to be in the direction of a monarchy, Earle declared, but this will not affect the status of the Jews.
While in Austria, the former American envoy deeply interested himself in the welfare of the Austrian Jews and maintained close contact with members of the Austrian Jewish community in order to familiarize himself with their situation.
Dr. Desider Friedmann, president of the Vienna Jewish community, Mr. Earle said, told him that not a single hair of a single Jew was touched during the recent upheavals.
Chancellor Dollfuss, Mr. Earle asserted, is in complete sympathy with the Jewish people.
“He is a devout Christian and a Christian in the right sense of the word.” the envoy characterized the Austrian dictator. “He is strongly opposed to anti-Semitism and will not permit any anti-Semitic manifestations in Austria.”
Mr. Earle aroused considerable comment last summer when, on a motor tour through the Austrian provinces, he warned Austrian authorities that they would lose the sympathy of Americans if they permitted or encouraged anti-Semitism. His warnings provoked a stormy outburst from Austrian Nazis and assurances from government authorities that they would take firm measures to crush anti-Semitic outbreaks.
“Insofar as Austria is concerned,” Mr. Earle declared, “the Nazis are through There is nothing more to worry on that score.”
