of the presence outside the doors of a mob of over 150 storm troopers, many of them carrying bludgeons and other weapons, who were awaiting a signal from the raiding squad.
The Jews came in for strong denunciation at the hands of the Voelkischer Beobachter, Hitler’s own newspaper, today, as well as in the Deutsche Zeitung and other organs of the radical Nazis, as the alleged source of “exaggerated reports and misstatements” about current developments in Germany in the foreign press. These reports are “due solely to Jewish influence,” the papers assert.
Johannes von Leers, author of the anti-Semitic pamphlet “Jews Looking At You,” in which such men as Einstein are defamed, accuses the Jews today of being the prime movers in the “conspiracy” against Hitler, discovery of which led to the repressive measures of the past few days.
Von Leers reproduces for the edification of his readers a copy of a leaflet allegedly found in the Western Road Synagogue at Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in which the announcement of the coming of world Jewish domination is attributed to some Jewish leader. A South African Nazi greyshirt leader is now under indictment for forgery in connection with this alleged document.
MORE “PLOT”
The Deutsche Zeitung also reproduced a copy of a letter from a Jewish physician in Haifa, Palestine, to an acquaintance in Germany, in which political opinions and forecasts of impending developments in the Reich are allegedly veiled under medical terms.
It became known yesterday that radical storm troop leaders had planned widespread attacks on the Jews in order to embarrass the government by putting it in the position of having to protect them. The government was #vare of this plan in advance, it was learned, and in order to show that anti-Semitism was not limited to just a part of the Nazi party, Prussian Premier Goering gave utterance to anti-Semitic expressions in a speech at Hamburg last week.
A survey by a Jewish organization here, which sent messengers out to all Jewish communities in the Reich, revealed that up until yesterday there had been no attack on the Jews during the disorders, that no Jews had been arrested in connection with them and that Jews had no part in the current developments. The investigation also disclosed that members of the Reichswehr, the regular army, and of the Stahlhelm, the war veterans, had patrolled districts where attacks on the Jews had been anticipated.
