HANS HINKEL, COMMISSAR FOR JEWISH CULTURAL AFFAIRS, TODAY BANNED ALL JEWISH CULTURAL AND SPORTS ACTIVITIES “UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE,” IN AN ORDER UNDERSTOOD TO BE CONNECTED WITH ITALIAN PREMIER MUSSOLINI’S VISIT TO GERMANY.

THE MEASURE, BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN TAKEN BECAUSE OFFICERS SUPERVISING JEWISH ACTIVITIES HAVE BEEN TRANSFERRED TO OTHER DUTIES, WAS EXPECTED TO BE LIFTED BY THE END OF THE WEEK. THE ORDER SAYS THE REASON FOR THE PROHIBITION IS THAT THE AUTHORITIES HAVE NOT SUFFICIENT AGENTS TO SUPERVISE JEWISH ACTIVITIES.

THE BAN EXTENDS TO REHEARSALS OF PLAYS, PERFORMANCES, SPORTS EVENTS AND TRAINING, AND HEBREW SCHOOL CLASSES, AT WHICH, ACCORDING TO GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS, A POLICE OFFICER MUST BE PRESENT.

STRONG RUMORS PREVAILED HERE THAT PREMIER MUSSOLINI HAD BEEN INFLUENCED TO INTERCEDE WITH FUEHRER HITLER REGARDING THE CHURCH PROBLEM AND THE JEWISH QUESTION IN GERMANY, AND MIGHT, IF THE OCCASION AROSE, SUGGEST THAT HITLER MODIFY HIS ANTI-JEWISH PROGRAM.

JEWISH HOUSES AND SHOPS ARE DISPLAYING THE ITALIAN COLORS. THE NUREMBERG LAWS OF 1935 PROHIBIT THE JEWS FROM FLYING THE NAZI SWASTIKA FLAG, BUT THIS BAN DOES NOT COVER THE ITALIAN FLAG.
